Iranian missiles strike UAE tankers, killing Indian sailor

An Indian crew member has been killed and eight others injured after Iran launched a cruise missile attack on two UAE oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Detailing the attack, a statement issued today by the UAE Defense Ministry said both targeted tankers were on the Omani side of the Strait of Hormuz at the time they were struck. The statement added that the survivors are in serious condition and are receiving treatment.

The two tankers hit have been confirmed by Abu Dhabi’s state-owned oil company, ADNOC L&S, to be the “Mombasa B” and the “Al Bayya.” Both are large crude oil carriers.

Amid the ongoing war in the region, the US Navy has been playing a leading role in delivering Gulf oil to international markets. Under this operation, more than 800 vessels and over 400 million barrels of crude oil have been moved across the Strait of Hormuz in the past two months or so, according to reports. A large portion of this has been carried on tankers belonging to UAE’s ADNOC.

With tensions in the region already heightened after Iran responded to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump about imposing a fee on those using the Strait of Hormuz, today’s strike is the largest attack Iran has launched on UAE vessels in recent days.
