Indian Coast Guard vessel runs aground on reef

An Indian Coast Guard vessel has run aground on the reef of Gili Lankanfushi Resort, located within the lagoon of K. Himmafushi. While the exact time of the incident has not been confirmed, witnesses report that a significant portion of the vessel is stranded on the reef.

Witnesses observed efforts to refloat the vessel, noting that another Indian military vessel was attempting to tow it free, and that Maldivian soldiers were also active in the area. However, due to the severity of the grounding, it appears the vessel could not be refloated at that time. Maldivian security forces have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.

It is noteworthy that incidents of foreign vessels running aground on Maldivian reefs have increased recently, with a notable prevalence of Indian vessels among them. Although these incidents cause significant damage to the reefs and result in millions of Rufiyaa in fines, the state has rarely received these payments. It is also observed that court cases filed to recover these fines often become prolonged and unresolved.
