Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was charged on Thursday with failing to fully disclose large amounts of cash and gold in his possession to the country’s Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

When the charges were read out at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court, Sabri, who also serves as a Member of Parliament, pleaded not guilty. He was released on bail of 300,000 ringgit. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 29.

The corruption and money laundering allegations against Sabri stem from claims that 700 million Malaysian ringgit of government funds were misused to promote the “Keluarga Malaysia” (Malaysian Family) campaign that he had announced. In the course of the investigation, the MACC seized 170 million ringgit in cash and 16 kilograms of gold worth 7 million ringgit from him, and arrested four of his former officers.

Sabri, who served as Prime Minister from August 2021 to November 2022, is the third former Malaysian Prime Minister — after Najib Razak and Muhyiddin Yassin — to face a corruption investigation. If convicted, he could face a five-year prison sentence or a fine of 100,000 ringgit.
