Ambassador Says Benefits of Development Projects Run with India’s Assistance Are Reaching People

The Indian Ambassador to the Maldives, J. Balasubramanyam, has stated that the development projects being implemented in the Maldives with assistance from the Indian government are projects directly connected to the lives of Maldivian citizens and ones that the people have recognized. In an exclusive interview with PSM News, the Ambassador said that under India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, the Maldives has always been a close partner of that country, and through this relationship, extensive assistance is being provided for the Maldives’ infrastructural development.

As highlighted by the Ambassador, projects run in the Maldives with India’s assistance are divided into two main categories, including large infrastructural projects and small community-benefit projects. In this regard, notable major projects include the currently ongoing Thilamale Bridge project, the development of Gan International Airport, the Addu road construction project, and the completed Hanimadhoo Airport project. Additionally, the Ambassador revealed that 78 small projects that will directly impact the community are underway, with assistance of approximately 455 million Rufiyaa provided for this. These include installing solar lights on islands, establishing outdoor gyms, increasing school resources, and building 12 ferries needed for RTL services.

Highlighting projects being implemented under High Impact Community Development, the Ambassador said that 100 million Rufiyaa alone has been spent on such projects being carried out in four phases. He also said that during his visits to islands, he witnessed scenes where people have gained great conveniences due to facilities such as water and sewerage systems and outdoor gyms. The Ambassador also noted that the feedback being received regarding these efforts being carried out in collaboration with the Maldivian government is very positive.

As evidence of the two countries’ relationship strengthening further, the Ambassador highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s 2024 visit to India. According to the Ambassador, that visit further solidified the relationship between the two countries and paved the way for development work to proceed vigorously in line with the leaders’ vision.
