Opposition MDP Vice President Hisaan Hussain resigned today

Opposition MDP’s Vice President Hisaan Hussain resigned from the position today.

In a letter sent to the party’s Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, Hisaan said that since former party President Abdulla Shahid, who had appointed her to the position, has stepped down, remaining as Vice President without a fresh mandate is not consistent with democratic principles.

Shahid resigned as party President on the 14th of this month in order to contest in the MDP primary for the upcoming presidential election. Shahid was elected to that position in 2023 after Nasheed resigned from the post and left MDP.

Hisaan, the former MP for Thulhaadhoo constituency and former President of the Judicial Service Commission, further said in the letter that even though she will not hold an official position in the party, she will always remain committed to serving the party’s progress as an ordinary member.

Notably, Hisaan attended the rally held in Addu City to announce Shahid’s candidacy. Additionally, MDP’s Deputy Chairperson Ahmed Abdulla also resigned from his position yesterday, saying it was to dedicate time to Shahid’s campaign.
