The reclamation work at Giraavarufalhu, one of the government’s largest projects aimed at providing a permanent solution to the housing shortage facing residents in the Greater Malé area, resumed this morning. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced this in a post on X, stating that project work has gradually commenced this morning.
Boskalis, the Dutch company contracted for this work, has now begun bund construction using the “Orange” dredger, one of the world’s largest dredgers. Using this massive 201-meter-long dredger, a total of 160 hectares of land is planned to be reclaimed from Giraavarufalhu, while approximately 50 hectares have already been reclaimed from the lagoon previously.
As land reclamation work progresses vigorously, the Housing Ministry has decided to conduct the plot allocation lottery specifically for those who received plots from Giraavarufalhu tomorrow. According to the area’s new land use plan, a total of 4,072 plots are scheduled to be distributed, including 2,603 plots of 1,250 square feet, 1,214 plots of 1,650 square feet, 254 plots of 2,050 square feet, and one plot of 2,450 square feet. The government’s objective is to complete land reclamation under this project as quickly as possible and ensure housing security for the people, and with the large dredger, this work has now accelerated further.
