Maldives defends title as South Asia’s strongest passport

According to the latest statistics from the “Henley Passport Index,” the most popular international standard for measuring the strength of global passports, the Maldives has defended its position as the holder of the most powerful passport in the South Asian region. The Maldives is ranked 52nd globally in this index. This represents significant progress compared to other countries in the region. With this success, Maldivian passport holders now have the opportunity to travel to over 90 countries without obtaining a prior visa.

Looking at the rankings of regional competitors, India, the closest rival to the Maldives, stands at 82nd on the index. While Bhutan is at 87th, neighboring Sri Lanka is at 93rd. Furthermore, with Bangladesh at 97th, Nepal at 98th, and Pakistan at 100th, the influence and power of the Maldivian passport within this region are evident.

On the international stage, the Singapore passport remains the world’s most powerful, allowing travel to 192 countries with on-arrival visas or visa-free access. Second place on this list goes to Japan and South Korea, while five European countries occupy the third position.

This advancement in passport ranking is viewed as a significant symbol of the trust and respect the Maldives commands in the international community. Consequently, this will bring major conveniences in visa matters for Maldivian entrepreneurs making business trips, students studying abroad, and citizens traveling for medical treatment.
