Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for standing with the people of Iran rather than protecting the government, amidst the worsening economic situation and ongoing serial protests against the regime. In a post on X, Nasheed stated that the Iranian people have taken to the streets to free themselves from long-standing restrictions and the burden of the rising cost of living. Consequently, Nasheed highlighted that Muslim nations and the international community must extend their support to the citizens.
These protests, triggered by the devaluation of the Iranian currency and soaring inflation which have made daily life difficult, have now spread to various cities across the country. As the government implements harsh measures to control the demonstrations, reports indicate that people have been killed in clashes with security forces. The Iranian government has warned of severe punishment for those who gather illegally and disrupt the peace.
In relation to this unrest, the United States has stated it will take action against Iran if protesters are attacked. While some media reports allege that the protests are supported by the US and Israel, pro-government supporters are also taking to the streets. Economists attribute the deterioration of Iran’s situation to sanctions and poor internal management.
