Nasheed proposes eliminating Sri Lanka-Maldives border controls amid visa issues

At a time when Maldivians are facing visa difficulties in Sri Lanka and complaints related to immigration procedures have increased, former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that eliminating border controls between the two countries would be the most beneficial approach for both nations.

President Nasheed made this call after Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Masood Imad expressed concerns to local media about Maldivians being treated disrespectfully by Sri Lankan immigration officials, subjected to harsh language. According to the Ambassador, complaints have significantly increased about Maldivians having to wait in queues for extended periods to obtain services and experiencing discriminatory treatment.

Regarding this matter, in a post on “X,” Nasheed stated that removing barriers such as visas and work permits and opening borders would further strengthen ties between the two countries in trade, tourism, and relations between the peoples. He described this as a permanent solution to the current unrest that has arisen.
