In the case of 8-month-old Yunus Hussein Abdullah, who died while receiving treatment at IGMH on July 28th, the hospital has apologized in response to accusations made by the family.
In a three-page letter signed by IGMH Medical Director Dr. Aiminath Zaiba Ahmed and sent to the family, it stated that communication with the family regarding the patient’s condition could have been better than it was. The family accused the hospital of being slow to recognize the seriousness of Yunus’s illness. IGMH stated that because the symptoms resembled those of a common viral fever, it was difficult to recognize the seriousness of the illness early.
However, the letter emphasized the importance of observing patient symptoms, conducting additional tests, and expediting treatment. Regarding the accusation of delayed ultrasound scan, the letter stated that although there were government holidays, scans for admitted patients would not be delayed. When Yunus’s condition deteriorated, the family attempted to take him abroad, but flight arrangements were finalized 10 minutes after Yunus died.
The letter stated that strict measures would be taken to prevent such incidents from recurring, and that arrangements would be improved through consultation with relevant government agencies to reduce the suffering of families. The letter expressed sincere apologies for Yunus passing away at the hospital.
