The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has denied false claims circulating on social media alleging that the commission conducted a study on allowing religions other than Islam in the Maldives.
In a statement, the commission said these are false accusations spread with the intention of making unfounded allegations against HRCM. The commission gave assurance that it has not created any survey or conducted any study regarding the presence of religions other than Islam in the Maldives.
HRCM stated that all its work is carried out in accordance with Islamic Shariah, the Maldivian Constitution, and international treaties to which the Maldives is party. The statement also said the commission has never advocated or permitted anything contrary to laws and regulations in its work. HRCM emphasized that priority is always given to Islamic Shariah and the interests of the Maldivian people and state in all circumstances.
