The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced that its congress will be held from October 1 to 3 at the Male’ City Council Hall.

Speaking at a press conference today, MDP Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed said the congress was originally scheduled to take place from September 19 to 21. However, the party was forced to postpone the event after failing to secure a suitable venue for those dates. He added that when the party rescheduled for October, the only available venue was the Male’ City Council Hall.

Deputy Chairperson Mohamed Shifaz noted that the congress, held once every five years, is a significant gathering during which major amendments are made to the party’s constitution. He highlighted that, unlike previous years, one session of this year’s congress will be dedicated to an investment forum. During this session, the party will engage with councillors from islands where MDP-led councils are in office to discuss opportunities for securing investment for development projects planned in their respective islands.
