President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a letter sent by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the Prime Minister of Mauritius regarding the Chagos issue will be withdrawn, and a special commission will be established to investigate how this occurred.
Delivering the presidential address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis’s first session of this year, the President stated that the government has now officially decided to withdraw the letter sent to Mauritius that would result in the loss of part of Maldives’ maritime territory. He revealed that since this matter raises major legal and constitutional questions, a special commission will be formed to investigate it.
President Muizzu further stated that following the commission’s investigation, action will be taken against those responsible for giving away part of Maldives’ maritime territory. Emphasizing that this is an important step toward protecting the sovereignty of Maldivians, the President announced today the delineation of the Maldives’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) to include the area claimed to have been lost.
With these decisions, the President assured that no part of Maldives’ maritime territory will be given away, and stated that the government will work to maintain that area as announced today.
