Hassan Mamdooh (known as “Monday”), who deceived and sold Capeaka Residence apartments to a large number of people, was sentenced today by the Criminal Court to 397 years in prison. This is the longest prison sentence ever handed down in the Maldives.
Out of 46 fraud charges, 44 deception charges, 3 charges of providing false documents, and 1 money laundering charge, a total of 94 charges against Monday were proven in court. At a rate of 8 years for each fraud charge totaling 368 years, plus 14 years for deception, 15 years for money laundering, and 2 years for providing false documents, the total sentence amounts to 397 years.
Judge Ali Nadeem stated that there were circumstances warranting increased punishment for the crimes Monday committed, and that a sentence serving as a deterrent to others was necessary. Along with the prison sentence, Monday was fined 30 million rufiyaa for money laundering, and the court also ordered the seizure of his penthouse in Hulhumale by the state.
Hambo Company stated that Capeaka apartments were sold to many people through fraud and deception without the company’s knowledge. Monday was accused of selling apartments to different people using forged documents created in Hambo Company’s name and embezzling the proceeds. During the investigation, property found in Monday’s penthouse was valued at approximately 15 million rufiyaa.
