Minister vows to clear pre-trial detention backlog within two years.

Homeland and Security Minister Ali Ihsan has stated that the backlog of people in pre-trial detention will be resolved within the next two years. Speaking to journalists, the Minister gave assurance that the issue of pre-trial detention will be completely resolved during this government’s term.

The Minister noted that those currently in pre-trial detention include people involved in murder cases, large-scale drug dealing, those who have harmed society using sharp weapons in violent attacks, and those who have sexually abused children. He said that when reviewing whether to tag someone, work can be done with the advice of the Prosecutor General, along with necessary information from police intelligence and investigations.

The Minister identified the main reasons the problem has reached this point as the lack of infrastructure at the former Criminal Court and the backlog of unheard cases. However, he stated that when this government took office, many trials of those in pre-trial detention have been completed, verdicts have been issued, and cases have started moving forward.

The Minister said that a new Criminal Court building will be constructed and completed within the government’s first two years, and that once the court’s space-related issues are resolved, the case processing will proceed very easily and at a faster pace.
