The Maldives’ prisons will be transformed into correctional centres that meet international standards within the next five years, said Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan. The minister made the remarks while answering a question from a member of the public at PSM’s “Ahaa” forum.

According to the minister, prisons had very limited space when the current government took office. Around 400 spaces have been added so far, and a further 100 will be added before the end of this month. The minister said the capacity is not being expanded to imprison citizens, but because space is needed for those who must be rehabilitated and reintegrated into society.

Although many cells previously lacked electricity and ventilation, the minister said these services are now provided in every cell, and some cells have also been fitted with air conditioning. He expressed confidence that if President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership continues, the number of inmates and people involved in crime will decrease day by day.

The Maldives Correctional Service has said that 370 beds have been established so far, with a target of adding space for 500 beds during this term. As a permanent solution to prison issues, the government plans to develop a modern central prison in Uthuru Thilafalhu under the “One Prison Concept,” where all services will be available in one place.
