Former MDP chairperson and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has strongly condemned an attack on a Raajje TV crew and the harassment they faced while filming the programme “Haalu Kihineh” in Dh. Meedhoo.
In a post on X today, Shahid called on the government and relevant institutions to ensure a safe working environment for journalists and to take action against those responsible for such acts. He also praised the Raajje TV team for their steadfastness and courage in reporting the truth despite challenges, dangers and intimidation.
The incident took place yesterday afternoon while the crew was filming “Haalu Kihineh,” a Raajje TV programme that highlights the living conditions of island communities, stalled development projects and residents’ concerns. Videos circulating on social media show a group approaching Raajje TV’s Head of Programmes, Aamir Saleem, while he was interviewing a resident, shouting and using abusive language.
According to some sources, several prominent PNC figures in Meedhoo were also present in the area when the incident took place. The same sources said a motorcycle was driven into the chair where cameraman Mohamed Anil was seated, and that attempts were made to damage the crew’s equipment.
Police have yet to comment on the incident.
