The Criminal Court has issued a summons to former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, ordering him to appear at 9:15 AM on September 29 in connection with the money laundering and bribery charges brought against him by the state.

According to the court, the hearing has been scheduled to address pre-trial submissions related to the case.

Yameen was previously sentenced to 11 years in prison on December 25, 2022, after the Criminal Court found him guilty of accepting USD 1.1 million in bribes and laundering the funds through the transaction involving the lease of V. Aarah. However, the High Court later ruled that new evidence submitted by the state had been improperly admitted, and ordered the Criminal Court to retry the case. On July 1, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s ruling.

In addition to this case, Yameen also faces charges related to alleged corruption in the leasing of R. Fuggiri, a case that remains ongoing at the lower court.
