Former President Mohamed Nasheed attended the opening ceremony of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) Congress held on Tuesday night at the Social Center. The ceremony was attended by senior PNC leaders, cabinet ministers, and Members of Parliament, along with a large number of the party’s general members.

Speaking at the ceremony, PNC Chairperson Abdul Raheem Abdulla noted that over the past two years, the party’s membership has grown from 3,000 to over 80,000. He assured President Mohamed Muizzu that all party members would remain committed with full sincerity and integrity to sustaining the current government.

Highlighting that President Muizzu assumed office at a time when the country’s economy was in a severely weakened state, Abdul Raheem said that — to borrow President Nasheed’s own words — this government had inherited nothing more than “a receipt of debt.” He therefore called for national-level support for President Muizzu’s efforts to build “Dhivehinge Raajje” (the Maldivians’ Maldives), and stated that the President deserves a second term in office. Notably, President Nasheed applauded these remarks in a gesture of approval.

The PNC Congress will continue from Tuesday through Friday. During the Congress, party officials will be elected to various positions in accordance with the party’s constitution, and the party’s future policies will be determined.
