The foundation stone for the largest mosque ever to be built in the Maldives, “Jamiu Sultan Mohamed bin Abdullah,” was laid today in a special ceremony held in Phase II of Hulhumalé.

The foundation was laid jointly by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Al Rajhi Company Chief Executive Officer Bandar Abdullah Al Rajhi, and Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Yahya Hassan Al Qahtani. HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair also took part in the ceremony.

Designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers at a time, the mosque will feature a spacious main prayer hall along with a range of facilities aimed at promoting Islamic education, culture, and community engagement. These include an Islamic library, a cultural centre, a Quran museum showcasing the historical journey of the Holy Quran, an exhibition hall, and a multipurpose community hall. The complex will also house administrative offices for imams and staff, a dedicated visitor area for tourists and members of the public, an Islamic bookstore, and a gift shop.
