2,538 births, 813 deaths in Maldives’ first half

According to the “Maldives Vital Statistics Quarterly Bulletin” released by Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) in conjunction with the Health Ministry, of the children born, 1,225 were born in the first quarter and 1,313 in the second quarter. Of these, 1,309 were boys. (Note: the original article’s figure here appears inconsistent with the total — worth flagging.)

Of the 813 people who died in the first six months, 89 were foreigners and the rest were Maldivian. 490 of those who died were men. By age group, the highest number of deaths was among people over 65 — 488 people in that age bracket died, along with 263 people aged 18–64, 10 children aged 5–17, and 30 children under the age of 4.

By region, 450 people died in the Malé area, while 343 died in the atolls.
