First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stated that the national jihad of Al-Sultan Al-Ghazi Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-A’zam, Bodu Thakurufaanu, is an example of the courage and bravery of the Maldivian people.

In a message shared on social media on the occasion of National Day, the First Lady said that Bodu Thakurufaanu’s jihad is a symbol of the unity and determination of the Maldivian people.

“Remembering the heroes who fought for the freedom of the Maldivian nation, I extend my greetings on this joyous National Day,” the First Lady Sajidha Mohamed said in her message.

National Day is commemorated to mark the jihad carried out by Muhammad Thakurufaanu to liberate the Maldives from Portuguese colonial rule. This day is observed on the 1st of Rabi’ul Awwal in the year 981 AH.

The government gives special importance to fully commemorating national days. Accordingly, the government has decided to hold various activities to mark this year’s National Day. The official ceremony of National Day is scheduled to be held in Utheemu, the island where the national hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu was born.
