Dr. Abdulla Fairoosh, State Minister at the Home Ministry, resigned from his position on Thursday.

Announcing his resignation in a post on X, Fairoosh said the decision came after “careful consideration.”

“After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position. I believe this is the right time to bring this chapter of my public service to a close,” he wrote on X.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country, and thanked the institutions he worked with as well as the colleagues alongside whom he served.

Fairoosh did not immediately respond to phone calls and text messages seeking further details about his resignation.

Fairoosh first joined President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration as a State Minister at the Higher Education Ministry, before being transferred to the Home Ministry on October 16, 2024.

He previously served for 20 years in the Maldives Police Service, from which he took honorable retirement in 2021. At the time, he held the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.

However, in light of allegations against him, Parliament rejected his honorable retirement later that same year. The matter was submitted to Parliament by then-Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed, who noted that the retirement could not be accepted under the newly enacted Maldives Police Service Act.

Following the fall of Nasheed’s government on February 7, 2012, Fairoosh served as Acting Police Commissioner. He is accused of playing a key role in the unrest that preceded Nasheed’s resignation — which Nasheed maintains was given under duress.
