MDP President Abdulla Shahid is set to travel to Addu City, where he is widely expected to formally launch his campaign for the party’s presidential primary ahead of the 2028 election.
The visit comes amid growing speculation that Shahid is preparing to enter the race to select MDP’s candidate for the next presidential contest. Addu, long regarded as MDP’s strongest support base and home to the largest bloc of party voters, has historically served as the launchpad for major bids for the party’s ticket.
To date, former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail is the only figure to have officially declared his candidacy. Faisal Naseem, who served as Vice President under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has also expressed interest in contesting.
Party members are watching the trip closely, with many anticipating that Shahid will use it to end months of speculation and formally enter the race.
