Search underway for three missing after cargo dhoni sinks

The MNDF has said that search operations by sea and air are underway to find three people who went missing when a dhoni traveling from Laamu Atoll to Huvadhu Atoll sank.

Police received information at around 23:22 last night that the supply dhoni named “Friend 4,” which was carrying eight people along with a cargo of stones and gravel, was taking on water and sinking. Seven of the eight people onboard were rescued, but three went missing during the rescue operation.

Those missing are Police Sergeant Ali Nafiu (33), MNDF Staff Sergeant Ibrahim Ahmed (39), and the dhoni’s captain Mohamed Hamdhoon (35) of Dhonveli, Th. Madifushi.

Speaking to PSM News, the MNDF Media Official said that none of the missing individuals have been found so far and that search efforts are continuing without pause. A UAV and a Maldivian flight are being used to survey the area from the air, while MNDF Coast Guard and police vessels are operating by sea.
