The Maldivian government has strongly condemned yesterday’s drone attacks on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities and other key sites.

According to Saudi Arabia’s Defence Ministry, drones launched yesterday targeting the kingdom’s Eastern Province, the capital Riyadh, and oil facilities were intercepted. The ministry said the attacks were carried out by an Iran-backed group operating out of Iraq.

In a statement issued in response to the attacks, the Maldivian Foreign Ministry described them as a serious threat to regional stability. The Maldivian government called for such acts, which obstruct efforts to establish peace and security, to be halted.

The government also said the Maldives stands firmly with Saudi Arabia and will support every measure the kingdom takes to protect its security and sovereignty.

The attacks on Saudi Arabia come after a roughly two-week pause in the intense exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran. Iran had earlier stated that with the United States halting its attacks, strikes on countries allied with the US had also been suspended.
