Maldives condemns Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia

The Maldivian government has strongly condemned the missile attacks launched by the Houthi group operating in Yemen against Saudi Arabia.

In a statement issued today, the Maldivian government said these were blatant attacks aimed at violating Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also said the government views this as a dangerous threat to the security and stability of the entire region. Furthermore, it stated that the Maldivian government stands firmly with Saudi Arabia and its people, and that the Maldives supports all measures taken by Saudi Arabia to protect its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

The Houthis carried out these attacks after ending a four-year truce, accusing Saudi Arabia of assisting in air strikes on an airport under the group’s control. Saudi Arabia said the missiles aimed at its southern regions were intercepted by defence systems. A spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition described those who fired the missiles as “terrorist Houthis.”

The Houthis’ military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, said the attack on Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia was carried out in response to the “major aggression” against Sanaa International Airport. He announced an end to the period of restraint in launching attacks and warned airlines not to use Saudi airspace until the “siege” of Sanaa airport is lifted.
