Galolhu South constituency Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem has assured that if elected to the position of MDP Chairperson, he will carry out his responsibilities freely and independently, without the influence of any party.
Meekail made this known while speaking at an “Ithubaru Salla” program held under his “Ithubaru” (Trust) campaign movement, which he launched for the Chairperson candidacy. He stated that his primary goal is not to work toward bringing a specific individual to power in the 2028 presidential election, but rather to unite the entire party and deliver success for the MDP.
Meekail noted that due to the balanced policy he maintains, he is receiving support from members who back various party leaders — including former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Mohamed Nasheed, Abdullah Shahid, and Faisal Naseem.
He emphasized the importance of having an independent Chairperson who does not support any particular candidate, in order to hold internal party elections and primaries fairly. Otherwise, he said, the general members’ trust would erode and the party would become more prone to internal conflict. Meekail reiterated that the MDP is not defined by any individual or presidential candidates, but by its 50,000 general members.
He further stated that strengthening party governance by listening to general members and increasing membership are key campaign goals. He also highlighted that since youth make up a large portion of the Maldives’ voting population, the MDP cannot earn young people’s trust unless young faces are visible in the party’s front lines.
