Waheed: Met Epstein twice, unaware of criminal activities

Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has stated that his relationship with American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein—who has been exposed for committing crimes such as child sexual abuse and blackmail—was purely official, as he had no knowledge of such despicable acts at the time.

In a statement issued by President Waheed’s office revealing this matter, it was stated that he dealt with Epstein only in an official capacity, and that he met with him on only two occasions. The statement also assured that President Waheed and no member of his family ever participated in any parties or other events hosted by Epstein. It further noted that there was no participation whatsoever in any inhumane acts committed by him.

President Waheed stated that he was not aware at the time that Epstein had been convicted in 2008 or that allegations had been made against him, and that had he known such information, he would not have maintained any level of contact. However, now that the truth has emerged, he expressed regret for having dealt with such a person.

Noting that Epstein’s actions are despicable acts that everyone must oppose, President Waheed has now resigned from his position as Special Envoy of the President following the revelation of his connection with Epstein.
