The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that a fire incident tonight at Hiya Tower 5 in Hulhumale Phase 2 has damaged the tower’s main sewage system, rendering toilets in some apartments unusable.
Providing information about the incident, NDMA Chief Executive Hisan Hassan stated that the fire broke out in a shaft within the tower. While the fire did not cause major damage to the interior of any apartments, black smoke rising during the fire forced the temporary evacuation of residents from two apartments.
Hisan further stated that the biggest damage from the fire was to the tower’s main sewage system. This has created difficulties in using toilets in some flats. To resolve this issue, MNDF, Police, HDC, and MWSC are working together to assess the damage and carry out repairs.
MNDF Fire and Rescue Service responded to this incident. It should be noted that similar fire incidents have occurred previously in the Hiya flats where large numbers of people reside, causing various degrees of damage.
