President Lays Foundation for “Aila Sustainable Township” with $790 Million Investment

The practical work on “Aila Sustainable Township,” the first major project to be implemented under the Maldives’ Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework, has officially commenced with the foundation laying ceremony. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu laid the foundation for this major $790 million USD investment project, which is planned for development in N. Atoll, during a special ceremony held for the occasion.

Approved in December last year, the project will be developed in areas including Digufarru Faru, Dekunufarhu, and Kuraamadhoo in N. Atoll. Undertaken by Crystal Holdings Private Limited, this project is a “township” designed with a broad range of diverse services rather than just developing a tourism resort. Accordingly, the project includes a world-class modern hospital, an international standard tourism school, as well as aquaculture and mariculture zones that will help ensure the Maldives’ food security. One of the most notable features of this environmentally friendly project is the decision to generate 60 percent of the entire facility’s energy from renewable sources.

Speaking at the ceremony launching this historic project, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed highlighted that this will bring revolutionary changes to the Maldives’ tourism industry. According to the Minister, at a time when competition in the global tourism market is increasing and tourists’ areas of interest are changing, productive projects like Aila are an absolutely essential strategic step for the Maldives’ economy. The Minister also stated that with this project, the Maldives will transform from being merely a vacation destination to being recognized by the international community as a suitable place for both living and investment.

The government aims to complete the work on Aila Sustainable Township and begin service delivery before the end of 2028. The government describes this township, being developed with unique and comprehensive resources unseen elsewhere in the entire Indian Ocean region, as the beginning of a new chapter in the Maldives’ economic development.
