India-Maldives ties transcend geography, ambassador tells Republic Day event

Indian Ambassador to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, stated that the age-old close relationship between the Maldives and India is traveling to entirely new horizons economically and in other sectors, and that this is not merely a connection based on geographical proximity. Speaking at a colorful ceremony held last night at the Social Center to mark India’s 77th Republic Day, the Ambassador highlighted the strong friendship built on trust and respect between the two nations.

Noting India’s achievements in the global economic arena, the Ambassador said that as India stands as the world’s fourth largest and fastest-growing economy, sharing the benefits and advantages of this with neighboring countries, especially the Maldives, is an important goal for India. In this regard, he noted that the numerous development projects progressing in various corners of the Maldives with Indian assistance are living proof of this healthy relationship, and the Ambassador expressed confidence that these projects will bring positive changes to Maldivian lives and open good opportunities for investments.

Furthermore, the Ambassador stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, India will always assist neighboring countries in overcoming challenges and strengthening their economies. He also said that as the political relationship between the Maldives and India marks 60 years, ties will further expand in education, health, and technology sectors in the future.

References were also made at this ceremony regarding the foreign policy pursued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s government. In this regard, the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty while strengthening economic ties with foreign countries were noted. This ceremony, attended by senior cabinet ministers, former presidents, Members of Parliament, mayors, and many high-ranking officials, became an important event symbolizing the relationship between the two nations.
