Teacher faces 60 years for sexually abusing students

The Prosecutor General’s Office has filed serious charges against a teacher at M. Atoll Madrasah for allegedly sexually abusing students, submitting the case to M. Kolhufushi Magistrate Court. The accused is Shuaib Abdullah from M. Kolhufushi, Saadhaage, who worked as a Health and Physical Education teacher at the school.

Filed on January 21, 2026, the case includes five charges against Shuaib. Under the Special Provisions Act on child sexual abuse, he faces two charges for committing sexual acts against minors while in a position of trust, and two charges for making minors watch sexual acts while in a position of trust. Additionally, under the Maldives Penal Code, he is charged with possessing pornographic material.

According to the PG Office, the charges stem from allegations that Shuaib touched two students he taught with sexual intent and showed them videos containing pornographic content. Committing such acts against students while in a position of trust carries severe legal penalties.

If convicted on all charges, Shuaib Abdullah faces a prison sentence exceeding 60 years. Each sexual act charge carries 15 to 18 years imprisonment, while the pornography possession charge carries one month and six days. In total, he faces a minimum potential sentence of 60 years, 1 month, and 6 days in prison.
