MMBC bans political cartoon over religious disrespect claims

The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission has ordered “Adhadhu” newspaper to remove and stop circulating a cartoon published on the 22nd of this month under its ‘Political Cartoon’ series, citing allegations that it contained scenes disrespectful to the pillars of Islam.

The commission sent a letter to the newspaper’s editor, Husain Fiyaz, regarding this matter. The letter noted that the cartoon appeared to depict sajda (prostration)—a sacred pillar of prayer—in association with deceit and trickery, in a manner that undermines religious foundations. The commission ordered the temporary suspension of that segment until the investigation concludes. It also demanded the immediate removal of the published post and a response within five days. Additionally, the commission urged the general public not to circulate this cartoon on social media, as it is content ordered to be removed.

In response to these allegations, “Adhadhu” newspaper issued a statement saying the cartoon depicts a person praying while stealing from the imam’s pocket. The newspaper stated this is not disrespect to Islam, but rather a social message highlighting the unfortunate reality that theft has increased in the Maldives, with incidents even occurring in mosques.
