Current Mayor Adam Azim has secured the MDP ticket to contest for Male’ City Mayor in the upcoming Local Council elections, receiving congratulations from the party’s two top leaders – former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Adam Azim won today’s closely-watched MDP primary by a large margin against former MP Ali Azim. As the preliminary results showed Adam Azim’s lead, both President Nasheed and President Solih sent congratulations via social media. President Nasheed had publicly supported Ali Azim in this primary and had actively participated in Ali Azim’s campaign activities and delivered speeches. However, in his post after the results, Nasheed congratulated Adam Azim and also praised Ali Azim’s efforts. He also noted that today’s election was well-organized and a complete primary, congratulating the entire party.

President Solih supported Adam Azim in this election. However, unlike Nasheed, Solih did not campaign publicly. Regarding Adam Azim’s victory, Solih said this represents MDP members recognizing the services provided to the people during the past two years as Mayor. He also urged Adam Azim to work towards implementing practical measures in the coming term that align with the voices and sentiments heard from members during the campaign.

As Adam Azim secured the MDP ticket, the rival PNC’s candidate for Mayor in the upcoming election will be former Defense Minister Moosa Ali Jaleel, who received his ticket without a primary. Additionally, Ismail Zareer, a finance sector expert with support from former President Yameen’s PNF, has also announced his candidacy for Male’ Mayor.
