Current Mayor Adam Azim has been selected as the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) candidate for Male’ City Mayor in the Local Council Elections scheduled for this April. Azim secured the ticket by winning the party primary held in Male’ today with a significant margin against former MP for Central Henveiru, Ali Azim.

Results from nearly all ballot boxes counted so far indicate that Adam Azim has taken the lead. Provisional results suggest Azim is set to secure over 60 percent of the total valid votes. This victory paves the way for Azim, who currently serves as the MDP President for the Male’ constituency, to contest for a second mayoral term.

Adam Azim first assumed the office of Male’ City Mayor after winning the by-election held on January 13, 2024. In that election, he competed against the ruling PNC candidate, Azima Shakoor, winning with 44.8 percent of the vote. That election saw a voter turnout of 31 percent from the 54,680 eligible voters in Male’ City.

Prior to assuming the mayorship, Azim served as the Managing Director of MTCC during the previous MDP administration. With today’s victory, MDP will field Adam Azim to defend the Male’ City mayoral seat in the upcoming Local Council Elections.
