MDP demands recall of envoy over undiplomatic remarks

The opposition MDP has submitted a motion to summon Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel to Parliament for questioning and to call for the immediate recall of Masood Imad, the Maldivian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, following his undiplomatic criticism of the Sri Lankan government.

The controversy arose from an interview Masood gave to a Sri Lankan newspaper, where he expressed displeasure by stating that Sri Lankan Immigration treats Maldivians in a “stepmotherly fashion.” He further warned that if Maldivians continue to be mistreated, the policy regarding visa issuance for Sri Lankan professionals working in the Maldives would be altered.

In the question submitted regarding this matter, Member of Parliament for Galolhu South, Meekail Ahmed Naseem, sought to clarify whether it is government policy to abandon diplomatic protocol and openly confront a neighboring nation. He also called for Masood’s dismissal and recall, citing that such irresponsible rhetoric could damage relations between the two countries.

While foreign affairs experts have expressed concern over the High Commissioner’s actions, the Foreign Ministry has not yet made an official comment. However, amidst the mounting criticism, Masood has met with Sri Lankan opposition leader Namal Rajapaksa.
