President Muizzu: Councils are governance partners, not accountability tools

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the view that councils are elected to hold the government accountable is a misconception, and that councils are an important partner within the governance system. Speaking at the ceremony to open the ruling PNC’s new office, the President noted that if members are elected with the intention of holding the government accountable, island development and municipal services will cease, and those places will turn into political hubs.

Referring to the upcoming Local Council Elections, the President said that the cooperation of councils is essential to speedily implement major projects planned by the government. Noting that some councils are currently hindering development due to opposition ideology, he requested citizens to make a decision in the election that ensures the pace of development does not slow down. At this gathering, attended by senior state officials, the President reiterated that this government will always prioritize the national interest.
