President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that although the death penalty for those importing drugs into the Maldives has been included in the new amendment to the Drugs Act, it is not a measure the government desires to enforce. Speaking at the inauguration of the PNC office, the President highlighted that this penalty was included in the law to address the drug scourge prevalent in society, intended to be implemented only in exceptional circumstances should it become absolutely necessary.
The President further expressed his hope that no individual would commit crimes reaching a level that warrants such severe punishment, noting that no citizen wishes for drug trafficking activities to take place in the Maldives. He added that the government is working sincerely, with the cooperation of the people, to resolve the major issues facing the nation.
