The People’s Majlis (Parliament) has today accepted constitutional amendments to hold the presidential election and parliamentary elections on the same day.
The bill, submitted on behalf of the government by PNC’s Parliamentary Group Leader and Inguraidhoo constituency member Ibrahim Falah, was supported by 46 members while five members did not support it. After accepting the bill, it was sent to the Independent Institutions Committee for review.
According to the amendments, parliamentary elections will be held together with the presidential election, and a parliament term will be five years starting from December 1st. The current parliament’s term will expire on December 1, 2028, and the first session of the newly elected parliament must be held on that date, as stated in the amendments. When this amendment is implemented, it will become possible to hold parliamentary and presidential elections on the same day.
