Dr. Aishath Rameela, the current government’s first Agriculture Minister, has been nominated to the People’s Majlis for appointment as President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM). President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted Rameela’s name on December 3, though the Majlis announced it today.
Rameela was appointed as an HRCM member on October 29. She resigned from her ministerial position on December 1 to seek cancer treatment. During the ongoing out-of-session Majlis sitting, her name has been sent to the Human Rights Committee for review.
Rameela, who holds a PhD in Social Sciences, has also served twice as State Minister of the Health Ministry. HRCM currently has five members: Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb Abdurrahim, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
