The Independent Institutions Committee has decided to complete work within 10 days on the constitutional amendment submitted to hold presidential and parliamentary elections together and shorten the current parliament’s term.
At today’s extraordinary session held by Parliament during recess, the constitutional amendment was submitted on behalf of the government by Ibrahim Falah, PNC Parliamentary Group Leader and Member for Inguraidhoo constituency. The debate on the amendment was concluded by Parliament this afternoon, and the bill was sent to the Independent Institutions Committee for review.
At the committee meeting held this afternoon, it was decided to open public consultation until the 15th of this month, with the Parliament Secretariat requesting comments be submitted before 2pm on Thursday. The deadline proposal by the committee’s Deputy Chairperson, Abdullah Shareef, Member for Kelaa constituency, was passed with unanimous agreement from committee members.
