Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for Hanimadhoo International Airport to be developed into a regional airline hub. In a post on X, Nasheed stated that establishing the airport as a regional airline hub and operating it in conjunction with such an airline would significantly increase benefits for Maldivians and facilitate development across the entire northern region.
Hanimadhoo Airport, officially opened on November 9, is currently the largest airport in northern Maldives. Originally opened as a domestic airport in October 1986, it was upgraded to international status in February 2012. The new terminal development project, which began in September 2022, has now been completed.
Built with Indian loan assistance, this airport ranks among the most expensive airport development projects undertaken in the Maldives. During the official opening ceremony by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, a Maldivian Airlines A-320 aircraft landed at the airport for the first time. The new terminal has been operational since last month, and with its state-of-the-art facilities, the airport is set to become a landmark for the northern region.
