After a year filled with fear, struggles and instability, along with major political changes in many countries, the entire world today has once again welcomed a hopeful new year.
Accordingly, while different parts of the world welcomed the year 2026 tonight and today with fireworks, music and various other activities, in the Maldives too, the new year was welcomed with different activities at resorts and in Hulhumale.
The government organized a laser show and fireworks display to welcome the new year, which was held in Hulhumale last night.
After the world bid farewell to 2025, a year that brought many sorrows due to economic difficulties and the fear of war, many people exchanged new year greetings to welcome the new year, describing the beginning of 2026 as a hopeful year, and while many are committed to bringing true color to their dreams for the new year, many are also describing the coming year as one that will pose many dangers to world peace due to economic issues and major problems between various countries.
New Year celebrated with fireworks in different parts of the world
In this regard, while the genocide being carried out by Israel in Gaza has ended, bringing new hope to the Palestinian people, the new year began with the hopes that many still hold that Israel’s oppression will come to an end.
At the same time, it should be noted that while the Maldives also welcomed the Gregorian new year, this new year will be important for the Maldives in every way. With local council elections scheduled to be held in April, and two years having passed since the new government elected in 2023, the new year has begun ushering in a completely new day for the nation politically as well.
Two years in government, major political change!
While the entire world has welcomed the new year, the upcoming 2026 will be a special year for the Maldives in every way. The biggest reason for this is that this year, which many hopes are tied to, marks two years for the new government, and will be a year when the country faces major political and other changes.
In this regard, after the 2023 presidential election, while two years have passed for President Muizzu’s government, major political changes have occurred. Within the past two years, the People’s Majlis has passed important bills, including amendments to the Constitution. Among these, the People’s Majlis amended the Constitution to prevent members from changing parties, decided to abolish atoll councils, and brought many other changes.
At the same time, as the new year was welcomed, the biggest change seen politically from political parties was the major corruption issues that occurred in some government companies. Accordingly, with major corruption allegations at HDC, the company’s MD Fazul Rasheed resigned from his position. In addition, with corruption allegations proven, some political figures were also jailed last year.
Many believe that while not many development projects progressed during the past two years, with the government’s promises that many development projects will progress this year with this government’s new budget, President Muizzu’s political path will become clear, and this year will be a major test for this government.
