Dr. Adeel has submitted his form to compete in the People’s National Congress (PNC) primary for the position of Mayor of Addu City in the upcoming local council elections. Dr. Adeel is the first person to submit a form for the Addu City mayoral race since PNC opened applications for the primary.
In a Facebook post after submitting his form, Dr. Adeel said he seeks the support and assistance of the beloved people of Addu City, PNC members, family members across the country, friends, and all well-wishers.
Dr. Adeel previously contested as the running mate of Colonel Nazim, the National Party’s presidential candidate in the last presidential election. However, in the second round of the presidential election, Dr. Adeel supported President Dr. Muizzu and played a leading role in garnering support for him in Addu City. He currently serves as State Minister at the Ministry of Education.
PNC is preparing to hold primaries to select candidates for party tickets ahead of the local council elections. The Addu City mayoral seat is competitive, and many candidates are expected to seek the PNC ticket. The deadline for submitting primary forms is the 15th of this month.
Addu City has the largest population in the southern Maldives. The mayoral seat is politically significant for the ruling party.
Local council election voting is scheduled for April 4th.
