Penthouse transactions reserved by executives, including Shakeel, cancelled

Hajj Corporation has decided to cancel all transactions made to sell units of its luxury housing development, Niaam Residence, to its employees. The decision came after “Dhauru” revealed that the building’s penthouses were set to go to the company’s former executives at discounted prices, prompting widespread public criticism.

Under a policy introduced earlier this year, before changes to the company’s management, employees were given priority and reduced prices when buying units in the 15-storey building being constructed in Hulhumalé Phase 2. Those who reserved penthouses under this policy include former Managing Director Mohamed Shakeel, now President of the Elections Commission, former COO Najeel Ahmed, and current Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Shihab.

In a statement issued last night, Hajj Corporation said it will set unit prices to bring the company the greatest possible profit and open the units for sale to the public. Niaam Residence is being developed as part of the company’s efforts to improve its financial position.
