Former Foreign Minister and former MDP President Abdulla Shahid has launched a sharp attack on the current administration, declaring that the government has lost all legitimacy by abandoning the promises and policies it sold to the people.

Speaking at a special gathering with a large number of his supporters last night, Shahid said the economic, financial, and foreign policy crises created by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration have plunged the country into a deep abyss. He described the current mood of the nation as one of overwhelming despair, noting that a growing number of citizens who love their country are already working to secure his victory in the 2028 presidential election so the nation can be brought back on track.

Turning to the state of Parliament, Shahid expressed dismay at what he called the loss of its independence, saying only 13 truly independent members remain in the People’s Majlis today. The rest, he claimed, have effectively been silenced — their mouths, in his words, sealed shut. He also stressed that the country currently lacks a free press and a genuine democracy, and gave a firm assurance that both would be fully restored under his leadership.

Shahid further pledged that his government would turn the long-held dream of real, affordable housing into a reality for the Maldivian people, and would establish a complete, high-quality healthcare system that meets citizens’ expectations.
