Delivering development and prosperity to the Maldives requires a single leader to serve at least 10 years in office, People’s National Congress (PNC) Chairperson and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said last night.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of PNC’s second congress, Abdul Raheem said stability, progress and prosperity for Maldivians can only be achieved if one leader serves two consecutive terms. He declared that the primary goal of this congress is to secure victory for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in the 2028 presidential election.

According to Abdul Raheem, President Muizzu is working to build a sovereign Maldives without allowing anyone to cross the “red line” of the nation’s independence. He said the President must be given another opportunity to complete this mission. He urged party members to leave the congress prepared to campaign for the 2028 election, adding that they should only loosen their resolve once victory is secured.

Noting the presence of opposition MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed at the ruling party’s congress, Abdul Raheem apologised for having to deliver such politically charged remarks in his presence. However, he maintained that political parties are formed with the purpose of governing.
