Under the national project to plant five million trees, initiated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, a total of 1,830,618 trees have been planted so far, according to the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy. This represents 37 percent of the entire project.

While the target for this year is to plant one million trees, more than 600,000 have already been planted. Minister of Climate Change Ali Sharif stated that the target set by the President will be fully achieved before the end of this year.

The programme primarily focuses on planting and propagating fruit trees, ornamental garden plants, large shade trees, and medicinal plants, including 90 species that are becoming extinct in the Maldives. To expand the project, work is underway to develop a modern 55,000 square-foot “Green Nursery” in Hulhumalé through a grant from the Government of China. Additionally, a grant of MVR 500,000 per island has been disbursed to establish nurseries on 20 islands across the Maldives.

Companies such as Rosewood, HDC, MACL, MTCC, SDM Farm, and STELCO have provided significant support to the programme. The largest contribution has come from Rosewood, with 1,478,244 trees (25.2 percent).

Notably, this project was announced by President Dr. Muizzu at the COP28 Summit and officially launched at Lonuziyaaraiy Park on 5 June 2024. To achieve the overall target of planting 5,859,394 trees, a further 4,028,776 trees still need to be planted.
