Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has paid off the one million rufiyaa he owed to the state after being convicted of money laundering in the MMPRC embezzlement case.

Following notification from the state that the money had been paid in full, the Civil Court concluded the case today. According to the court report, Adeeb paid 100,000 rufiyaa in September of last year, and the remaining 900,000 rufiyaa was paid last week.

In the sentence handed down by the Criminal Court on October 5, 2020, Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison along with a fine of two million rufiyaa. Although the ruling ordered that one million rufiyaa of that amount be paid within a month, the state filed the case in the Civil Court after the money was not paid.

This sentence was a lenient one given to Adeeb under a plea agreement reached with the state. While the prison sentence was being served under house arrest due to health reasons, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih pardoned both Adeeb and former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath before the end of his term.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has stated that this embezzlement alone, which took place during President Yameen’s administration, cost the state 1.5 billion rufiyaa.
